Indie Memphis Film Festival

0

Where: Memphis, Tennessee

When: October 31 – November 3

What: The title pretty much tells you what you need to know, but here’s the website description for a little added background:

With a focus on regional filmmaking, the Indie Memphis Film Festival brings a broad range of dynamic and engaging independent features, documentaries and short films to Memphis from all corners of the country. Now entering it’s 16th year, the festival has been ranked by MovieMaker Magazine as one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals” and as a ”Film Festival Worth the Entry Fee,” and named a “Top 20 Event” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

As befits anything going down in the Bluff City, Indie Memphis has a solid music component, with numerous live gigs and several music docs scattered among the nonfiction features – last year they gave the doc prize to Very Extremely Dangerous, Paul Duane and Robert Gordon’s hilariously harrowing ride with Sun recording artist-turned-outlaw Jerry McGill. The competition this year includes two more music docs with major local flavor: I Am Soul, an exploration of Memphis’s incredibly rich soul music tradition, and Meanwhile in Memphis: The Sound of a Revolution, which documents the city’s DIY artists across the last four decades.
